Appalachian State kicker Dominic De Freitas pushed a 45-yard field-goal attempt wide right as time expired, allowing Arkansas State to survive and become bowl eligible with a 30-29 victory Saturday afternoon at Kidd Brewer Stadium in Boone, N.C.
It was looking bleak for Arkansas State (6-6, 5-3 Sun Belt Conference) in what proved to be a wild last two minutes of the game. Appalachian State (5-7, 2-6) led 26-23 with just 1:42 left and appeared to go ahead 32-23 when JJ Kohl found a wide-open Dillon Galloway for a 6-yard touchdown on a fourth-and-1 play.
But the score was called back due to an illegal formation penalty, forcing the Mountaineers to settle for a 29-yard field goal and a 29-23 advantage with 1:34 left.
