An individual has died following a police chase that started in Butler County and ended in Allegheny County on I-279 Saturday night.

The incident, which shut down southbound I-279 for hours, ended in a crash and then shots being fired, according to Post-Gazette news partner KDKA.

The report indicated several police agencies began chasing an SUV in Butler County and into Allegheny County. The SUV driver lost control and crashed.

KDKA reported that after the crash, shots were fired from inside the SUV, and an officer returned fire.

Four people who had been inside the vehicle were taken to a nearby hospital. One of them died, according to the report.

Identities of those involved and details on what triggered the police chase have not been released.
