Booker and Lewis marry in Newark

US Sen. Cory Booker and Alexis Lewis wasted no time in tying the knot.

The 56-year-old Democratic lawmaker and Lewis married in covert ceremonies over Thanksgiving weekend, both in Newark and Washington, D.C., less than three months after their engagement.

"Overflowing with gratitude. We said ‘I do’ in two places that shaped us—Cory’s beloved Newark and Alexis’s hometown of Washington, D.C.—first at the courthouse, then with our families," Booker said on social media. "Hearts full and so grateful."

Lewis is vice president of investments at Brasa Capital Management, a real estate firm, according to her company bio.

Before joining Brasa, Lewis worked for the Los Angeles Mayor’s Office of Economic Development, where she led commercial development efforts in South Los Angeles and co-led the Mayor’s Evolve Entertainment Fund, the Brasa website says.

The pair held an interfaith ceremony with a rabbi and pastor beneath a huppah surrounded by photos of relatives who have died, The New York Times reports. Their family-only reception honored both of their religions. Booker is Christian, and Lewis is Jewish.

The couple was legally married on Monday at the federal courthouse in Newark, where their parents served as witnesses and U.S. District Court Judge Julien Xavier Neals officiated, The Times said. They celebrated afterward with Italian pastries and a vegan chocolate chip cookie dough cake, a nod to Booker’s vegan diet.

Lewis holds a bachelor’s degree in marketing from New York University and an MBA from Cornell University’s SC Johnson College of Business. The couple lives in Newark’s Central Ward.
