EAST LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - Michigan State football’s Jonathan Smith era is reportedly coming to an end, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports .

The decision comes after the Spartans stumbled to a 4-8 (1-8 Big Ten) record in Smith’s second season after beginning the year 3-0. The Spartans avoided the infamy of being the first MSU team to lose every Big Ten game by beating Maryland 38-28 in the season finale at Ford Field on Saturday.

Smith arrived in East Lansing from Oregon State before the 2024 season, going 5-7 that year, but all five wins were subsequently vacated . After going 4-8 this season, Smith’s Spartans were 9-15 on the field, but he departs with an official record of 4-15.

Smith’s buyout will cost $33 million.
