The Des Moines International Airport reopened to travelers on Sunday, hours after a Delta flight skidded off an icy runway during the post-Thanksgiving travel rush.
Airport officials said at approximately 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, a Delta aircraft from Detroit, Michigan, to Des Moines left the paved surface from the runway to the taxiway, WHO-TV, the NBC affiliate in Des Moines, reported.
At approximately 11:37 a.m., the airport posted on social media, saying, in part, "The airfield is now open and operations have resumed. We appreciate everyone’s patience..."
The flight-tracking website FlightAware.com reported 41 flights were canceled at the airport on Sunday, which amounted to 42% of the airport's flights for the day. In addition, 45 flight delays were reported.
