A powerful winter storm is targeting the Northeast, bringing the season’s first widespread snow for many cities as it pushes from the Midwest to New England.
Forecasters say the system will deliver a mix of snow and rain, with the heaviest snowfall likely across interior areas and mainly rain along the coast.
The National Weather Service says a coastal low is on track to pass south and east of the region overnight Monday, Dec. 1 into Tuesday, Dec. 2. Areas inland can expect snow or a rain/snow mix, while coastal locations will mainly see rain, including Long Island
AccuWeather meteorologists predict a strong push of cold air in the East will bring snow chances with multiple storms this week. Some cities could see their first significant accumulation of the season.
“A slight shift in the storm track farther offshore could help to pull in cold enough air for snow to occur in places like Philadelphia, New York City and Boston,” AccuWeather Meteorologist Brandon Buckingham said. “Just on the other side of the rain/snow line, where the colder air is more dominant, a zone of 3-6 inches of snow is possible across eastern Pennsylvania, upstate New York and across portions of New England.”
Snow totals of 3-6 inches are possible for cities such as Scranton, Albany and Worcester through Tuesday. Snow may also reach Philadelphia, New York City and Boston, depending on how close the rain/snow line sets up.
Heavy rain is also in the forecast, with 1-2 inches expected from Atlanta to Charlotte to Washington, DC, and Philadelphia. The downpours could cause travel delays along the I-95 corridor, especially during the Tuesday morning commute, with the risk of ponding, reduced visibility and drainage issues in low-lying areas.
Cold air will linger across the central and eastern US, with AccuWeather tracking more potential winter storms through the first half of December that could bring additional snow and ice to the region.
Another system is on track for Friday, Dec. 5 into Saturday, Dec. 6, is predicted to bring snow farthest north, a mix of rain, snow, and ice elsewhere, with rain along the coast and farther south.
