NORFOLK, Va. — An early morning fire stripped a Norfolk family of everything they owned. Now donations are pouring in as the community rallies around them.
John Vellines, his wife, and their four young children were inside their home on Buckingham Avenue when it caught fire on Saturday morning . They made it out safely, but flames destroyed the house and all of the family’s belongings.
Vellines' sister, Erin McCabe, stepped in to help by creating a fundraiser to help the family.
“We did it because I knew they would never ask for help," said McCabe. "They're just not those type of people.”
They set the fundraiser goal at $50,000 on GoFundMe , just enough to help the family get back on their feet. But in less than 48 hours, hundreds of donations poured in, raising the total to more t
