CLARKSBURG, W.Va. — The West Virginia Democratic Party on Monday pressed Gov. Patrick Morrisey to explain why West Virginia National Guard members deployed to Washington, have been assigned to landscaping and cleanup work despite state and federal claims that the mission was intended to help combat crime in the nation’s capital.
The request comes as the deployment remains under intense scrutiny following last week’s terrorist attack near the White House that killed West Virginia National Guard Spc. Sarah Beckstrom, 20, of Webster Springs, and critically wounded Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, 24, of Martinsburg and Inwood.
In the days after the attack, Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., said Guard participation in Washington should remain strictly voluntary. President Donald Trump
