Imagine getting a parking ticket for something like parking too close to a stop sign or parking in front of your house, and then having your driver’s license suspended because of it.

That scenario has become a reality for hundreds of drivers in the city of Lorain due to what officials now acknowledge was a flawed process in the issuing of parking tickets, uncovered through an investigation by The Marshall Project - Cleveland.

The Marshall Project investigation found that for years, Lorain has allowed auxiliary police officers to write parking tickets with criminal summons, making a minor parking infraction a misdemeanor charge.

Violators who did not appear in court or immediately pay the fine had their licenses suspended.
