Two Alaska State Troopers are being recognized for going above and beyond to save lives.
Governor Mike Dunleavy honored Troopers Nathan Hollenbeck and Garrett Stephens at his Anchorage office for their heroic actions earlier this year.
In May, Trooper Hollenbeck kept a man afloat in the Tanana River for 30 minutes until a rescue boat could arrive. The following month, Trooper Stephens dove into Mat-Su Lake to rescue a 17-year-old boy from 42-degree water.
“Definitely an honor. I think it could be any of the troopers really being up here by myself. I just happened to be the one on duty that day,” Hollenbeck said. Stephens added, “I think a lot of troopers do extraordinary things that don’t get recognized. So it’s nice to actually get recognized for something like this.”
