LANSING, Mich. (WILX) -Aging often comes with more trips to the doctor.
A national poll on healthy aging from the University of Michigan finds that nearly 40% of adults over 50 years old have had someone attend their healthcare appointments with them in the past year.
For people who did have what’s called a “healthcare companion” at their appointments, more than 90% said it was helpful.
Along with keeping someone company, healthcare companions helped to provide transportation or to help ask and answer questions.
The main reasons people did not want someone joining their appointment were that they did not feel they needed the help, preferred to be alone or did not want to be a burden to others.
