Washington ― Michigan U.S. Sen. Gary Peters this week reintroduced a bill that he crafted in response to the 2022 findings of misconduct and a pattern of substandard surgical care at the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center in Detroit.
Investigators had found the hospital's now-former leaders had tried to conceal the problems at the Midtown hospital in part by manipulating or altering external peer reviews. The medical center is now under different leadership.
Peters' legislation aims to ensure neutrality in the peer review process used by the Department of Veteran Affairs to probe concerns about the quality of medical care provided at VA hospitals across the country.
Peters' aim with the bill is to ensure that members of a VA facility's Peer Review Committee should not be participating
