More than a year after the Ontario government disbanded its university-led wastewater testing network, a lab at the University of Waterloo continues to monitor water samples for traces of COVID-19 and other viruses.

The Waterloo research lab, in partnership with Metagenom Bio Life Science, is currently tracking wastewater for York Region, which provides an indication of the broader picture across Ontario.

As more people pack indoors as temperatures start to cool, initial samples show that respiratory viruses are starting to circulate again.

The latest data, compiled Tuesday, shows that Flu A is increasing, now at 1.5 copies/mL, and RSV is just starting to be detected, with less than 1 copy/mL.
