Vincent Chan, a 45-year-old nursery worker, has pleaded guilty to a series of shocking sexual offences against children as young as two. The abuse occurred at a nursery in West Hampstead, London, between August 2022 and June 2024. Chan admitted to 26 charges at Wood Green Crown Court, including five counts of sexual assault by penetration and 11 counts of taking indecent photographs of children.
The victims, aged between two and four years old, were subjected to Chan's depraved actions, which he filmed and distorted for what he described as "comedic effect." The police have confirmed that Chan's offences have caused significant distress among families, with Detective Superintendent Lewis Basford stating, "These appalling offences have caused deep shock and distress. Chan’s offending spanned years, revealing a calculated and predatory pattern of abuse."
Chan was first arrested on June 11, 2024, after a colleague reported him for taking disturbing footage of infants using a nursery-issued iPad. Following his arrest, police seized 69 digital devices, uncovering a substantial number of indecent images and evidence of his crimes.
The families of the victims expressed their horror at the situation, stating through their lawyers, "As parents we are still trying to process the sickening discovery that our children were subjected to despicable abuse by Vincent Chan at the nursery. We trust the judge to pass the strongest sentence to fit the crimes Vincent Chan has committed against young children, innocent victims who could not fight back."
Currently, four children have been identified as victims, and their parents have been informed and provided with support. The NSPCC has set up a helpline for families whose children attended the nursery to discuss their concerns. Police continue to investigate the materials seized but have not found further evidence of contact offences. Chan's actions have left a community in shock, as they grapple with the betrayal of trust in a place meant to be a safe environment for children.
