AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - A Richmond County Sheriff’s Office sergeant who saved two people from drowning in the Savannah River was honored Tuesday with a life jacket loaner station bearing his name.

Sergeant Darrell Grooms rescued Glenn Wright Sr. and his son, Glenn Wright Jr., from a dangerous current at Lock and Dam Park in early June while on patrol.

“It’s just one of those split decisions you make in this job. You take an oath to serve and protect. And that day I knew they were in trouble and I did what I had to do to help them,” Grooms said. “If it would have cost me, it would have cost me.”
