SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - Sioux Falls Animal Control and the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks plan to use pyrotechnics and sound cannons to scare geese from quarry ponds near the Sioux Empire Fairgrounds, Elmwood Golf Course, and the Household Hazardous Waste Facility, with hopes to reduce the number of geese in these areas for airplane safety.
Parts of the Big Sioux River in Sioux Falls stay open in winter, and the birds can access nearby food sources, like harvested crop fields near the airport.
However, flying geese can damage airplanes by hitting windshields or entering engines.
Animal Control is collaborating with the Sioux Falls Regional Airport, Landscapes Golf Management, and the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks to deter the geese.
