BAY CITY, MI — An Auburn man is heading to federal prison for burglarizing a convenience store of alcohol and cigarettes, then torching the structure in an attempt to cover his tracks.

U.S. District Judge Thomas L. Ludington on Nov. 17 sentenced Daniel C. Stellmacher II, 44, to 51 months in prison. The judge recommended Stellmacher serve his time in a medical facility.

Once Stellmacher has served his term, he’s to remain on supervised release for a further three years. Stellmacher will also owe some financial restitution, though the figure has yet to be determined.

Stellmacher in May pleaded guilty to one count of arson. The charge stems from a fire that occurred within the Marathon gas station at 991 W. Midland Road in the wee hours of July 30, 2023.
