CANARSIE — THE STATE BOARD FOR HISTORIC PRESERVATION HAS NOMINATED THE BAY VIEW HOUSES , along with 18 other properties and districts, to the State and National Registers of Historic Places.
A large public housing complex for middle-income tenants in Brooklyn’s Canarsie’s neighborhood, the Bay View Houses were built in 1955-56 under the New York City Housing Authority’s City IV program. This comprised the last phase of city-funded public housing before the Mitchell-Lama law of 1955 and similar legislation shifted the responsibility for middle-income housing construction away from city government onto private developers.
The State and National Registers are the official lists of buildings, structures, districts, landscapes, objects and sites that are significant in the history, arch
