A former Westmoreland County police chief is facing more than a half-dozen charges, accused of illegally buying prescription drugs from a Ligonier man while he was on duty and in his unmarked patrol vehicle, according to the Westmoreland County District Attorney’s Office.

State police in Greensburg filed the charges against former Ligonier Valley police Chief John Berger on Friday based on a presentment before a county grand jury, DA Nicole Ziccarelli said.

Mr. Berger, 53, is charged with bribery, criminal use of communications, possession with intent to deliver, acquiring a controlled substance through misrepresentation, receipt of a controlled substance, theft and obstructing the administration of law.
