After moving to Sarnia in 2021 for work, Ezinne Obele and Paul Oneke quickly found a lack of African and Caribbean food options.
The Nigerian couple, who came to Canada in 2018, Obele said, aren’t alone in Sarnia when it comes to local demand for African and Caribbean food.
Often Oneke, who works in sales, picks up foodstuffs as he travels for friends because they’re unavailable closer to home, she said.
With the closest African and Caribbean options in London, travelling there or even the GTA to get things like fufu, Ghana banku and jerk spices for cooking isn’t exactly convenient, she said.
So Obele and Oneke are doing something about it, she said, opening Sarnia African and Caribbean Stores at 236 Cromwell St., just east of downtown.
