A man is dead following a police shooting at the Danforth GO station early Saturday morning. The incident occurred just after 1 a.m. when officers responded to reports of an individual with a firearm in the area of Main Street and Stephenson Avenue.
Upon arrival, police found a man in a stairwell leading to platform No. 3. According to Monica Hudon, a spokesperson for the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), one officer discharged their weapon multiple times, striking the man. He sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to a hospital, where he later died.
The SIU, Ontario’s police oversight agency, has initiated an investigation into the shooting. Hudon confirmed that three investigators and two forensic specialists have been assigned to the case. The SIU has identified one officer as a subject official, whose actions may have contributed to the man's death, along with four witness officials. The investigation will also include reviewing CCTV and body camera footage from the officers involved.
An autopsy for the deceased man, whose identity has not yet been released, is scheduled for tomorrow morning in Toronto. The age of the man has not been disclosed.
In support of their members, Clayton Campbell, president of the Toronto Police Association, and director Ron Tait were present at the scene. The association emphasized the unpredictable nature of police work, stating, "No police officer starts their shift wanting or intending to use force. But when the public calls, they respond to dangerous, unpredictable situations and make split-second decisions in order to keep everyone safe, including themselves."
No officers were reported injured during the incident. The Toronto Police Association will continue to provide support to its members throughout the SIU's investigation.
As a result of the ongoing investigation, GO Transit has reported significant delays on the Lakeshore East line. All trains are currently bypassing Danforth GO station until further notice. Commuters are advised to use TTC services as an alternative for their travel needs.
