EDENTON, N.C. — The Edenton Police Department and Chowan County Sheriff’s Office say all available resources were deployed Sunday night to locate an inmate who escaped from the Chowan County Detention Center.

By Monday morning, authorities confirmed the escapee had been taken back into custody.

Police had been searching for 23-year-old Charles Edward Babb, who escaped around 8:10 p.m. Sunday from the detention center at 100 Court St. in Edenton. According to investigators, Babb used a small hand-held edged weapon to force his way out of the facility and flee into the community.

Deputies and officers worked through the night, following up on reported sightings and tips from residents. Babb had been described as having brown hair, brown eyes, and a teardrop tattoo under his right eye. He
