A historic former hotel in downtown Detroit now used as apartments has until Monday to pay a portion of its overdue power bills to avoid a shutoff.
Judge Maria Oxholm, who is overseeing the Leland's ongoing federal bankruptcy case, ruled Thursday the hotel has until Monday to pay a deposit of more than $57,000 to keep the lights on. DTE Energy originally planned to shut off power on Dec. 3 to the hotel at 400 Bagley St., prompting the building's operator to give notice to residents last week they needed to move out immediately, before the extension to pay the power bill deposit was granted.
The 1927 hotel is going through bankruptcy so its operator can get financing to renovate the building and sell it to a new owner. Luis Ramirez, the president of the Leland House Limited Partnership,
