The City of Sault Ste. Marie is committed to doing everything in its power to strengthen the local economy and pursue new opportunities, said Mayor Matthew Shoemaker.
Shoemaker addressed the city at the outset of Monday’s budget meeting.

He said last week’s announcement that Algoma Steel would be laying off more than 1,000 workers, effective March 23, sent shock waves throughout the community.
He noted that a “rough outline” of a plan to start new production lines and improve existing production lines would save about 500 of those jobs “which is undoubtedly a welcome commitment for our anxious city.”
