FAIRFIELD, Conn. (WFSB) - Connecticut has its first measles case in more than four years after an unvaccinated child under 10 in Fairfield County contracted the virus following international travel.

The child began showing symptoms several days after returning, including cough, runny nose, fever and a rash that started at the head and spread throughout the body.

This comes as measles cases are surging nationwide. More than 1,800 cases have been reported in 2025, the most since the virus was declared eliminated in the U.S. in 2000.

Measles spreads quickly through the air when someone coughs or sneezes. The CDC says 9 out of 10 unvaccinated people who encounter an infected person will get measles.
