CHESAPEAKE, Va. — Drivers in Chesapeake could go home with a turkey instead of a traffic ticket on Friday, as part of the 10th annual “Turkey Instead of a Ticket” program.
The event is a partnership between the Chesapeake Police Department, the Chesapeake Jubilee Committee, Chesapeake Crime Line, Kroger, and other sponsors. Officers will offer a turkey during traffic stops if the circumstances and driver behavior allow.
The initiative began with citizen Rodney Foster, who raised money from local sponsors. The Chesapeake Jubilee and Kroger assisted, with proceeds benefiting the Chesapeake Crime Line. Over the past nine years, the program has donated more than $10,000 to the organization.
Kroger has been a sponsor for all 10 years of the program.
