New Jersey residents are seeing it all this summer. Bouts of extreme heat, downpours of torrential rain, and now a 3.0 magnitude earthquake shook the state's northern and central counties on Saturday night.

The earthquake registered 3.0 on the Richter scale. Its epicenter was near Hasbrouck Heights in Bergen County, at 6.2 miles underground along the Ramapo Fault system, a seismic zone that runs through New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania, the USGS said.

The federal agency described Saturday night’s earthquake as “small,” saying that seismic activity in this region is relatively rare. Northern and central New Jersey has experienced a few recent tremors, including:

● July 21, 2025: Six 1.6-to-2.0 earthquakes were centered near Randolph, NJ

● March 21, 2025: A 1.8 magnitude earthquak
