SUITLAND, Md. — A 9-year-old was killed in a house fire early Tuesday morning, Prince George's County Fire Department said.

Just before 1:45 a.m., the fire department arrived at a two-story single-family house on the 5800 block of Auth Road in Suitland. The 9-year-old and their mother were inside the house at the time of the fire.

PGFD Assistant Fire Chief Caroll Spriggs said the mother was able to escape through a first-floor window with the help of a neighbor. When firefighters searched the rest of the home, they found the child on the second floor. They were able to get them out of the house through the second-floor window, but they were in critical condition. The child was brought to a nearby hospital, where they died from their injuries around 3 a.m.
