KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — The first day of school for Knox County students is Thursday, and while parents, teachers, and children prepare for the next academic year – safety remains a top priority.

KCS Superintendent Jon Rysewyk was joined by the Knoxville Police Department, and Knox County Sheriff's Office Tuesday where they outlined their safety plans for the year.

“My expectation is that every adult in the building will take responsibility and create a safe and supportive environment for all of our kids,” said Rysewyk.

Starting with before they even arrive, both KPD and KCSO said there will be increased traffic enforcement outside school zones.

“If you speed in the school zone, you will get a ticket. We're not going to give you warning. We're going to give you a ticket,” said KPD ch
