RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) -- A medium risk of excessive rainfall is possible in nearly all of central North Carolina through Wednesday, the National Weather Service says.
The medium excessive rainfall risk means scattered instances of flash flooding will be possible.
Far northern counties are under a low risk for excessive rainfall, forecasters said.
The weather service in Raleigh said the greatest risk for heavy rain through Wednesday morning will be over western central North Carolina and western Sandhills.
Then, the highest risk for excessive rain will shift to areas east of U.S. 1 starting Wednesday afternoon and through the night, the National Weather Service warned.
Rainfall totals of up to 3 inches are possible -- with even higher levels in localized spots -- through late Wednesday.
