Columbia firefighters and paramedics responded to an incident Wednesday morning involving a person whose leg was impaled by a piece of reinforcing steel, according to a news release from the Columbia Fire Department.

The fall incident happened in the 300 block of Parkwood Court.

A ladder truck was dispatched to the scene while crews used special tools to cut and remove the metal and railroad ties while keeping the patient's leg stabilized, according to the Fire Department. The reinforced steel was the type typically used in concrete construction.

The patient received pain control and stabilization of blood pressure, heart rate and circulation to protect organ function, according to the Fire Department.
