BRISTOL, Va. (WJHL) — The Bristol Virginia Police Department (BVPD) proudly announced its first group of certified officers to use the BolaWrap, a tool that will help de-escalation efforts.

The BolaWrap is a handheld remote restraint device that discharges a Kevlar cord around a non-compliant subject's limbs, temporarily restricting movement without pain or injury, according to the BVPD.

BVPD's BolaWrap master instructor, Officer Darrell Dickenson, said he is proud to help introduce the tool into officers' arsenal.

"This is a tool that gives our officers a clear and effective way to gain compliance from a distance," Dickenson said. "It's all about providing officers with more options to de-escalate, ensuring a safer outcome for everyone involved."
