TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is one of many agencies that provide hurricane forecasts before and during the Atlantic hurricane season.

Staying above-average

The agency updated the forecast numbers on Thursday. After a relatively slow start to the Atlantic season, NOAA is scaling back the range of named storms and hurricanes by one. The updated forecast is below:

According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), an average hurricane season has 14 named storms, seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes category three or greater.

The original forecast called for 13 to 19 named storms, six to 10 hurricanes and three to five major hurricanes — notice the shift in the forecast is very minor.
