BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) - The Kentucky Department of Education certifies tax rates each year, but it’s up to local school boards to decide what those rates will actually be.

There was a full house Thursday at the Caverna Independent Schools board meeting as taxpayers gathered to share concerns and learn what this year’s tax rate will be.

“I think no one wants their tax bills to go up, and often times schools get the blame for that it’s important to have these open meetings so that the public and the board can understand what it really means when school districts at their tax rate,” said superintendent Amanda Abell.

This year, the compensating tax rate is 72.2 cents which is a decrease from 2024.

To decide this tax rate, the board has to consider a lot of factors.
