Watch out and pay attention to the flags flying along the beaches today, as we’ll see higher-than-usual rip current risks. A high risk of rip currents is in place for both the Northern and Southern Outer Banks. Due to the northeast breeze, swells generated by the unsettled waters from the Atlantic will continue. The culprit is from an area of low pressure off our coast.

That threat drops to a low threat of rip currents for the Crystal Coast.

If you’re heading to the beach today, keep these tips in mind:

Swim only near staffed lifeguard stations—they’re trained to spot trouble before it starts.

Look for the beach warning flags. A red flag means stay out of the water.

Never swim alone. Always go in with a buddy and let someone on shore know your location.
