A child hurt by gunfire in west Louisville is believed to have accidentally shot themselves, police said.

Louisville Metro police were called to Norton West Louisville Hospital around 11:40 a.m. Thursday about a young shooting victim who was taken there by private means.

They said the child, 4 years old, was treated and taken to Norton Children's.

Police believe the shooting happened at a home in the 2700 block of Garland Avenue, which is barely a block from Norton West, in the Parkland neighborhood.

On Friday, LMPD said they believe the shooting "is a result of an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound to the child’s arm."
