William A. Smith, former CFO of the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy who embezzled more than $40 million, wants to delay reporting to prison to begin serving his 19 year sentence.
His attorneys Gerald Evelyn and Robert Higbee asked that U.S. District Judge Susan DeClercq delay his reporting date and keep their motion under seal because it contains "sensitive, personal mediical information. "
Judge DeClercq approved the motion.
There is no reporting date posted in the court record.
In a presentencing report in April, Smith said:
“I want the judge to know that I am extremely remorseful and want the opportunity to work to get the victims as close to whole as possible. I am ashamed of what I’ve done to the city and the project that I love.
