Nkechinyere Okwuwasi, a senior at City High Middle School in Grand Rapids, wants to be a neurosurgeon.

Her goal is to attend an out-of-state-school, possibly the Ivy League Brown University. To prepare, she’s studying between two and four hours every day for the SAT.

Okwuwasi, who’s taking the test in August for the second time, is one of thousands of students across the state gearing up to take a college entrance exam in the next few months.

The state of Michigan requires that all high school students take one entrance exam -- the SAT -- during their junior year.
