A car went off the highway, careened down a steep riverbank and landed upside down in the Merrimack River, submerging the driver under water in Manchester, New Hampshire, Friday morning.
The Manchester Fire Department said it responded to the area of Exit 4 on I-293 northbound just before 6 a.m. after someone called from another vehicle saying they saw a car cross the shoulder and go into the river.

Crews initially had trouble finding the vehicle, the fire department said. They walked north on the river bank and found it about 150 yards from the reported location, at a rest on its roof, with the driver's compartment submerged under water.
