The heat index ― a measure of how hot it feels to the human body when humidity and air temperature combine ― is forecast to reach 101 in the city by mid-afternoon, according to a heat advisory issued by the weather station . This is on top of the already hot 91-degree high temperature forecast.

A combination of southerly winds drawing up moisture from the Gulf of Mexico and a low pressure system over the Dakotas is bringing the dew point up in the region past 70, creating "uncomfortable" weather, Alumbaugh said.
