The evening skies above South Carolina this weekend will be filled with a rare treat — back-to-back full moons. Weather permitting, of course.

The Sturgeon Moon, as the August full moon is known, will appear both Aug. 9 and Aug. 10. This is possible due to the timing of the full moon stage at 3:55 a.m. Saturday , according to LiveScience.com .

When a full moon happens overnight, it allows for it to appear almost identically full both the evening before and after.

The moon orbits Earth every 29 days, meaning it rises about 50 minutes later each day on average, LiveScience.com explains. That is different in August, when the full moon hangs low on the horizon and the time it rises this weekend will be about 30 minutes apart.
