COLUMBIA, S.C. — Drivers in South Carolina may be tempted to pay off their apparent traffic tickets when they get a text from the Department of Motor Vehicles.
But there's a problem. The South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (SCDMV) is warning the public that these texts are not from them, and the money paid will not be used to clear a ticket.
The agency said on Friday that a recent wave of scam text messages impersonating someone at the SCDMV claims to be collecting money owed on traffic tickets. For many, these are tickets they know nothing about since they aren't real. The messages redirect the user to a fake page to either steal sensitive information or money outright.
