BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WBRC ) - As your students head back to the classroom, a group of leaders spent the summer working on plans for emergency situations.

Jim Coker with the Jefferson County EMA said there are more than 200 schools in the county, and it’s important that every one of them has a plan in case of an emergency.

Throughout the summer, the EMA sat down with several districts to go over different types of safety drills, including weather, transportation, and intruders. From there, they help craft a plan.

“The last thing anyone wants, us included, is to try and come up with the plan in the middle of an event,” said Coker.
