TYLER, Texas — A Tyler family is without a home after a massive tree crashed through their roof during a powerful thunderstorm.
Bill and Chris Jones say the storm struck around 3:30 p.m. Friday. The couple was outside when lightning began to flash and winds picked up rapidly. Before they could get to safety, a large tree toppled onto their home, shattering the roof and sending debris throughout the house.
"It sounded like a bomb went off," Bill said. "There was glass breaking, ceilings collapsing, we did not know what was happening."
The home sustained major damage, including flooding and structural instability. Making matters worse, the family says their insurance provider was initially unresponsive, delaying assistance despite the home being uninhabitable.
