IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) - Kids’ Day sees Kid Captains from the Stead Family Children’s Hospital take the field with Hawkeye players.

One of the captains, Luke Johnston, got to walk out with Kelby Telander. Both have a cochlear implant on the same side.

“It feels cool and very special,” said Luke Johnston.

“Kelby also has an implant on the same side as Luke. So he was able to really make a connection with him,” said Luke’s mother, Amy.

Iowa head coach, Kirk Ferentz applauded the bravery of the kids.

“You want to talk about courage, the children that are being treated over there, it’s an amazing thing,” said Ferentz.

“They fight and fight. They fight being excluded and fight not feeling like they’re enough, and now they’re just celebrated for who they are,” said the mother of another Ki
