High temperatures of nearly 100 degrees from Sunday through Tuesday have prompted forecasters to issue an extreme heat warning for the Portland area.

Temperatures really start to heat up after noon on Sunday, and the National Weather Service expects heat to peak around 5 p.m. in the upper 90s.

Though cooling shelters are not yet open in Multnomah County, several libraries, pools, malls, community centers and splash pads offer Portland residents a place to beat the heat.

Anyone living in an area experiencing extreme heat should stay in air-conditioned spaces if possible during the hottest parts of the day, stay hydrated and avoid caffeine or alcohol, and use cool compresses, cold showers and baths to beat the heat, the Oregon Health Authority said
