ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) — It's not every day you get to celebrate your 101st birthday. But, on Sunday, August 10, one woman in Elmira got to do just that.

Friends, family, and fellow worshippers gathered at the Westside United Methodist Church to celebrate Norma Doane. Doane has lived in the Twin Tiers her entire life. She's lived in places such as Lockwood, Waverly, and Chemung. She has left a decades long impact on the community as a teacher in the region.

"I taught 8th grade English for 22 and a half years at Broadway," Doane said. "That was a great experience."

Doane's love for education is seen throughout her family. People at the party said they enjoy stopping by to visit her because she lets them borrow books.
