ORANGEBURG COUNTY, S.C. — A South Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper has been hospitalized with life-threatening injuries following an early morning incident on I-26, officials say.

According to the Lexington County Sheriff's Department, which is investigating the crash at the request of the Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office, the crash happened around 2 a.m. near mile marker 166.

Spokesperson Adam Myrick said preliminary details suggest a trooper was struck by a vehicle while he was outside his marked patrol unit during a traffic stop. No one else was injured.

Myrick said one person, 45-year-old Anthony Aydlette of Hanahan, has been arrested and charged with driving under suspension. He was taken to the Orangeburg County jail.
