DES MOINES, Iowa — Arizona Sen. Ruben Gallego just completed a two-day swing through the traditional early-caucus state of Iowa.

Gallego’s itinerary–including the obligatory visit to the Iowa State Fair–had all the hallmarks of a presidential campaign in the making.

I put the question to Gallego during a walk-and-talk interview along the Fair’s main boulevard:

“Can you say that running for president is out of the question?”

Gallego responded with a qualifier:

“Right now, running for president is out of the question.”

He cited family responsibilities and his work in the U.S. Senate he joined just eight months ago.
