LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - In recognition of National 811 Day, Consumers Energy is reminding customers across Michigan to stay safe around natural gas by calling 811 before any digging project.

This step helps prevent accidental damage to underground utility lines, including gas pipes and electric cables.

811 is a free service that will mark underground pipes and wires before customers put a shovel into the ground.

Consumers recommends using the ‘3 Rs’

Recognize

Rotten egg smell

Blowing or hissing sound

Dying or discolored plants in a healthy area

Dirt or dust blowing from a hole in the ground

Bubbling in wet areas

Fire, if a gas leak is ignited

React

Get to a safe place outside as soon as possible

Don’t start your car or use electronics

Don’t try to locate the source of the lea
